In first time in 1908 Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna Jarvis organized the organization for honor of her mother at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church. Jarvis was a peace activist in United States and she spent her time and effort in very important situations such as caring with wounded soldiers in American Civil War and also she opened Mother’s Day Work Clubs to work with public health system issues and take care of society! About her effort on Mother’s Day issue, beyond honoring her mother, she wanted to point and appreciate to all mothers around the world at least one day, because she believed that mothers are very special people who can give anything to their children even they do not have. Then her campaign held in United States Congress but the proposal was rejected regarding being a national and official holiday. In 1911, many local areas started to celebrate this as officially a holiday.
Then in 1914, Wilson signed to proclamation and announced that each second Sunday of May will be celebrated to honor mothers. A couple of years later in 1920’s, Mother’s Day become very popular and famous around the world thanks to advertisement of companies and big shops. They introduce this day a chance to give thanks to your mother in best way: buying somethings. Jarvis thought that this kind of approach on Mother’s Day is completely wrong and misunderstood, so she organized many protest and boycott to buy in this day against the companies who are trying to make highest profit. Also, she used laws against the companies and promote people to handwriting letters which express person’s love and emotion towards his/her mother. In time, this day was separated and became universal via globalization and developed communication devices. Nowadays, we can say that there is no any country to not celebrate Mother’s Day.
